BEST Beef Stew EVER!

This stew recipe has been in the family for three generations and you can bet it will be one of the first things my kids learn how to make. One would expect that when they make a giant pot of stew, that it would last a few days. The last time we made this (our son Louie’s First Birthday), the pot was scraped clean and I didn’t even get any! This stew is seriously that good. The roast chunks melt in your mouth and the taste is absolutely divine. You’re going to love this recipe and you’re going to make it again and again. It’s one of my favorite dinner’s and I think it’s going to be one of yours too.

Dredging Ingredients:

3 tbsp. flour

1-1/2 tsp. salt

Black pepper to taste/your liking


Stew Ingredients:

1 2-3lb boneless chuck roast: cut into roughly 1” cubes (other meats that work well with this recipe include: Elk & Buffalo)

3 tbsp. fat (butter, baking grease or lard) No fancy stuff here folks!

3 cloves of garlic, minced, chopped, or diced, however you feel like decimating it is fine.

2-1/2 cups strongly brewed black coffee

1/4 cup molasses

1 tsp. salt

2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. marjoram, oregano will work if you don’t have marjoram – but go get some marjoram for your spice cupboard would ya!?

1 dash of cayenne pepper

black pepper to your liking

1-1/2 cups water

5 carrots, roughly chopped

5 red potatoes, cut into eighths

1 yellow onion, diced


Slurry Ingredients (for thickening):

1/4 cup water

3 tbsp. flour


Mix together flour, salt & black pepper and dredge the cubed roast pieces.

Melt fat in a Dutch oven on medium heat, add meat and brown on all sides.

Add garlic, cook for approximately one minute and then pour in coffee, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, marjoram, salt, cayenne & black pepper.

Bring to a boil, then cover immediately and simmer for 1-1/2 hours.

Add water, potatoes, onion, & carrots, and simmer for 30 minutes.

To make slurry, blend flour & water together into a smooth paste, and then add to stew.

Stir stew, mixing all ingredients and then let simmer for 15 minutes or until desired thickness.

Taste…and add salt, black pepper & Worcestershire sauce to your liking.
